studying abroad:
In addition to the CAED’s Integrated Design Competition (IDC), it is prestigiously noted for its Study Abroad Program. During the second semester of third year, all CAED students have the option of studying at Kent State’s European campus located in the heart in Florence, Italy. Just steps from the infamous Piazza della Signoria and a mere 3 blocks from Architecture’s famed Florence [Duomo] Cathedral, the historically renovated Palazzo dei Cerchi campus building facilitates numerous European Professors, many of which work (or have worked) for critically acclaimed design firms throughout the world. In addition to world-class education, the students are able to travel on a weekly basis in order to learn, experience, and document all of the wonders that Europe has to offer.
For 2 weeks prior to the 5 months of study, as well as 10 days after, I was privileged enough to be able to backpack through Europe in an attempt to familiarize myself with as many cultures as possible, thus gaining a more universal perception of the world around me (see blog). Now having traveled to some 11 countries, to a myriad of cities (both European and American), and to countless historical sites (both architectural and otherwise) I believe I have done just that. While I am a strong advocate of the notion that a true designer never ceases to learn, I believe that I have been extremely fortunate to have been able to establish such a diverse and substantial base on which future knowledge is sure to be based.
