integrated design competition (IDC):

Kent State University's College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) is renown for its implication of its Integrated Design Competition during the final semester of 4th year design studio.  It is a partnered-senior thesis project which encompasses all prior years of study, specifically in terms of Environmental Technology, Methods & Materials, and Architectural Design Studio, in order to create a highly sustainable 250,000 square foot mixed-use office building, all the while keeping a building efficiency level of over 75%.  Students work with several Professional Consultants in regards to Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical systems in order to calculate, document, design and produce construction grade documents in addition to presentation quality competition boards and highly detailed, hand-crafted models.  The intensive, semester-long project promotes innovation, use of modern technology/methods/materials, and perhaps most importantly, a real-world experience of practical team-design during which strict deadlines are required to be met in order to succeed.

Washington D.C. developers of Forest City also collaborated with the CAED for the comprehensive project, discussing real-life design guidelines and intentions for the existing Naval Yard site, as well as assisting in the selection of the 10+ competition finalists.
